The Super Bowl isn’t just about the game and halftime show (or the beer and chicken wing dip). While millions of fans tune in to see their favorite teams battling it out for the infamous ring, they will be paying attention to the commercials that have become a Super Bowl staple. For top automakers who aren’t afraid to break the bank, this is the ultimate opportunity to show off their new models.
Super Bowl 52 (Eagles vs. Patriots) will air this Sunday, Feb. 4 on NBC – and each 30 second ad spot costs a cool $5 million.
A Cultural Phenomenon.
Super Bowl advertisements have become a cultural phenomenon within themselves – with many viewers strictly tuning in for the commercials. Major networks such as CBS and NBC have devoted entire program specials airing noteable Super Bowl advertisements – ranging from lost puppies, to Betty White, to a puppymonkeybaby.
For almost a decade straight, the automotive industry has been the single largest advertising category during the Super Bowl – and it looks like this year will be no different.
The Line Up.
Figuring out which OEMs plan to advertise each year is a guessing game in itself – but here’s what we’ve dug up so far.
Major automakers including Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Lexus reportedly plan to air on the big screen this year, aiming to reach wide demographics and high viewership – as many as 111 million viewers.
Ford Will Bring the Nostalgia.
Earlier this month, Ford released a trailer for a supposed Super Bowl advertisement, which re-creates the legendary car chase featuring the all-new 2019 Ford Mustang BULLITT.
Hyundai Will Tug the Heartstrings.
Last Super Bowl, Hyundai tugged at millions of heart strings across the nation during their 90 second campaign, in which they surprised U.S. troops stationed abroad with virtual visits from their family members in the states.
This year, they have teased a 30 second clip announcing that they will yet again be surprising heroes across the U.S. – we just have to wait and find out what that surprise will be.
Kia Will Give Us Some Laughs.
Kia has shared two sneak peeks for their upcoming Super Bowl commercials – in which one features racing icon Emerson Fittipaldi, and a more light-hearted action commercial with comedian Melissa McCarthy.
Lexus Will Bring the Action.
Lexus released an action-packed 60 second trailer to promote their all-new 2018 Lexus LS 500 F SPORT, which is sure to grab viewers’ attention.
Tune into this Sunday’s Super Bowl on NBC to catch the full length advertisements from these automakers – with the amount of dough they’re spending, I’m sure they won’t disappoint. And keep your eyes peeled for some surprise additions to our list!
